Rapper 21 Savage’s Situation is Complex and Concerning

This is a disturbing situation with rapper 21 Savage.

Seemed that most of the internet was laughing or surprised on Sunday (2/3/19) about the news of  21 Savage possibly being from the U.K. After being arrested for “overstaying his visa”, the rapper was part of a targeted effort from ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement). This problem has been brewing in our country and most people involved in the US’s Immigration policies , don’t see a way to fix the ever-growing problem.

How did it begin for 21 Savage? It all started when he was involved in a Fulton County drug case in 2014. He served 12 months probation and this case is important because, Fulton County jail records show his birthplace as Atlanta, Georgia.

This is a very familiar issue (even to birthright U.S. citizens who travel and reside in different states throughout their lives), the rapper claimed Atlanta, given the fact he spent his formative years in the southern city.

On Sunday, February 3, ICE arrested the rapper on charges related to overstaying his visa. As of today, he is still being help and no charges has been filed against him. As The Hill reports, 21 Savage is currently under ICE custody and if deported, he will be banned from reentering the country for 10 years. This is a similar story for those who were born outside of the United States, to parents who have US Citizenship. They are basically at the mercy of the government and the regulations in the Immigration laws

Black Lives Matter has launched a #Free21Savage petition in order to stop the young rapper’s deportation process. Civil rights groups such as UndocuBlackColor of Change, and Define American have joined in on the cause. As the petition states, “There are around 4.2 Million Black immigrants in the U.S. — 619,000 are undocumented.”

At the time of this article’s posting, the petition has over 125,000 signatures, with a goal of 200,000.
