March 18, 2013

February was a heavy metal month for some of music's top stars, who all celebrated new gold or platinum certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America, or RIAA.

Pink was the month's big winner when it came to albums, scoring a double platinum certification -- that's sales of two million copies -- for her 2008 album Funhouse.  She can now officially brag about having sold more than 13 million albums over her 13-year career.

Scoring their first-ever platinum album certification were The Lumineers, for their self-titled debut album, featuring the smash hit "Ho Hey."  Ed Sheeran notched his first-ever gold album -- that's sales of a half a million copies -- for his U.S. debut, + [plus], which includes his Grammy-nominated hit "The A Team."  And Bruno Mars celebrated a platinum certification for his latest, Unorthodox Jukebox.

On the singles side, One Direction was the big winner, earning a quadruple platinum certification -- that's four million copies sold -- for "What Makes You Beautiful."  Rihanna got a triple platinum certification for her song "S&M," while double platinum awards went to Cher Lloyd for "Want U Back" and Drake for "Best I Ever Had."

And in a case of "let's go back and count up how many copies this old song has actually sold," Bon Jovi's 1986 classic "Livin' on a Prayer" has earned a triple platinum certification.
